Description
MIRAGE
The Porsche 911 and the real Southern California — a coffee table book about self-determination, sun, and the soul of an icon.
Under The Sun Vol. 1 shows the Porsche 911 exactly as it is: unwashed, worn-out leather, no frills — and an icon precisely because of it. Frank Rocholl, founder of Mirage, curates this photography book as a tribute to So-Cal Porsche culture: tan lines and prickly pears, the Pacific in the rearview mirror, Santa Ana winds blowing everything away. A book about self-determination — and the perfect gift for everyone who sees the 911 not as a sports car, but as a way of being.
Not a tech book. A road-trip manifesto.
What makes this Porsche 911 photography book different? It doesn’t explain engine specs or list trim levels — it just drives. Under The Sun dives into the subculture the 911 has shaped in Southern California for generations: tight bends, open sky, city lights, and desert rain. So-Cal Porschephiles have embodied the myth of the outrageously hedonistic Porsche long before it became a brand icon. Stones over Beatles. Beach hair, a cool head, an orange bonnet. Frank Rocholl — whose editorial voice is rooted in the hedonistic culture of the 1960s and 1970s — has translated this world into images, as the first volume in a series that treats travel, identity, and automotive heritage as life philosophy. “What if I say you’re not like the others?” The 911 never answered that question. It just lived it.
The gift for Porsche enthusiasts who have everything — except this book
Looking for a gift for someone whose eyes light up at the sight of a 911? For the California dreamer who treats road trips as philosophy? Or for the counter-culture person who chose the Porsche precisely because it’s not flashy — worn-out leather, no frills? Under The Sun is that book. For a birthday, for Christmas, as a wedding gift, or just because. Pre-order now — shipping end of June.

Frequently asked questions
Which Porsche is the focus of the book?
The Porsche 911 — not as a race car or engineering achievement, but as a cultural symbol. Under The Sun shows the 911 the way it’s lived in Southern California: unwashed, worn-in, iconic. The 911 is the visual and philosophical center of the entire book.
What is “So-Cal Porsche culture”?
So-Cal Porsche culture is the decades-old subculture that has grown around the Porsche 911 in Southern California. It’s not about race tracks or showroom gloss — it’s about self-determination, hedonism, and the freedom of the open road. Tan lines, prickly pears, the Pacific on the horizon. An attitude, not a brand.
Is this book for Porsche drivers or also for people who don’t own one?
For both. Under The Sun is not a vehicle catalogue — it’s a book about a feeling, counter-culture, and the beauty of setting out. Anyone who loves photography, California aesthetics, and editorial coffee table books will love it just as much as someone whose 911 is sitting in the garage right now.
When does it ship?
Under The Sun Vol. 1 is currently available for pre-order. The planned shipping date is end of June. Order now to secure one of the first copies.
