Peppermint Products is a Berlin design brand making everyday objects from rope and steel — every piece designed by Roman Luyken after his studies in the UK, inspired by years of competitive sailing. The rope products are still handcrafted today in a government-funded Berlin social workshop for people with special needs. And then there is this: Peppermint has discontinued its steel collection. Paper Tray, Toolbox, Tissuebox, Note Roller, ZigZag, Digital 8, Frame Kits, Bike Lift, and the Plug 2 and Plug 4 power strips — these products are no longer available from Peppermint themselves. Charles & Marie is the only place you can still get them.
The story behind the rope
Founder Roman Luyken grew up sailing — discovered on the Greek island of Milos where he spent his summers as a child, and soon pursued seriously as competitive racing. Countless hours working with ropes to tune his boat taught him to love the material: its texture, its stability, its versatility. After completing his design studies in the UK, he brought it home.
The ROPE HANGER was the first product — a clothes hanger made of steel wire with a rope outer covering, better than plastic, leaves no marks on fabric, and looks better than anything else in a wardrobe. From there, a full collection for wardrobe, desk, kitchen, and bathroom followed.
Handmade in Berlin — with real purpose
All rope products are made by hand — one by one — in a dedicated Peppermint space within a social workshop in Berlin. The workshop is part of a government-funded programme providing employment, skills, and purpose to people with special needs and diverse backgrounds. No assembly line, no machine — people who care about what they make.
Production in Germany means short supply chains, a low carbon footprint, and 100% eco-friendly packaging.
The rope collection
The heart of the brand. The LOOP ROPE is the hanging rope wardrobe made of 10 mm rope — height-adjustable, rated to 20 kg (7 heavy winter coats), and designed for small apartments without built-in wardrobes. Mounts to ceiling or wall. The ROPE HANGER is the everyday clothes hanger: steel wire with polypropylene rope outer covering, wide, stable, no slipping, no marks, UV and sweat resistant. Also available as a Cotton version in 100% natural yarn for delicate fabrics like cashmere and silk. Available as a set of 3, set of 12, and as the KIDS version for children's wardrobes. The ROPE HOOK is an S-hook for hallway, bathroom, and kitchen — in polypropylene and cotton. The CORD HANGER and CORD HOOK offer a slimmer profile with aluminium caps. And ROPE CLIPS extend the functionality of all hangers and hooks.
The last steel collection — only available here
Peppermint has discontinued its steel and design product range. These products are no longer available from Peppermint themselves — Charles & Marie is the only place you can still buy them. If you want them, now is the time.
The last steel collection includes: Paper Tray, Toolbox (desk organiser), Tissuebox, Note Roller (notepad holder and writing board), Paper Roller (wall-mounted flipchart), and ZigZag — available as a wall coat rack and as a soap dish. Plus Digital 8 (steel house number), Frame Kit (acrylic picture frame), Bike Lift (wall-mounted bicycle storage, designed by Tim Plorin), and the Radicchio & Porri cotton tea towel set. And the power strips Plug 4 (4-way, matte steel housing) and Plug 2 (2-way USB adapter). All designed by Roman Luyken — except the Bike Lift.
As a Gift
Peppermint Products is one of the best gifts for anyone moving in, moving house, or finally getting organised. A gift that gets used, looks good, and has a story. The LOOP ROPE is the housewarming gift for small apartments — practical, beautifully designed, and always remembered. The Cotton ROPE HANGER is the premium everyday upgrade. For a complete solution: LOOP ROPE + ROPE HANGERs + ROPE HOOKs. The steel products make a particularly strong desk gift for design-minded people — especially because they won't be available much longer.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Peppermint Products and who is behind it?
Peppermint Products is a Berlin-based design brand, founded by Roman Luyken — a passionate competitive sailor who brought his love for rope home. The rope products are handcrafted in a government-funded social workshop in Berlin. The steel and design products were also designed by Roman Luyken and are now only available from a small number of retailers following the discontinuation of that collection.
What is the LOOP ROPE and what is it designed for?
The LOOP ROPE is a hanging rope wardrobe made of 10 mm rope with steel-reinforced, height-adjustable loops. It holds up to 20 kg — the equivalent of approximately 7 heavy winter coats — and mounts to ceiling or wall. Ideal for small apartments without built-in wardrobes, guest rooms, hallways, or anywhere clothes need to be stored quickly and neatly.
What is the difference between the ROPE HANGER and the Cotton version?
The standard ROPE HANGER is made of steel wire with a polypropylene rope outer covering: tough, UV-resistant, sweat-resistant, and easy to clean. The Cotton version is made from 100% natural yarn — softer and especially gentle on delicate fabrics such as cashmere, silk, and fine knitwear. Both versions are wide, shape-stable, and leave no marks on clothing.
Where are Peppermint rope products made?
All rope products are handmade — one by one — in a dedicated Peppermint space within a government-funded social workshop in Berlin, Germany. The workshop provides employment and skills to people with special needs. German production means short supply chains, a low carbon footprint, and 100% eco-friendly packaging.
Do the rope hangers leave marks on clothing?
No — this is one of the biggest advantages over plastic hangers. The steel wire with rope outer covering is wider than a standard plastic hanger, shape-stable, and soft enough not to mark or dent fabric. For particularly delicate materials such as cashmere, knitwear, or silk, the Cotton version is especially well-suited.
Why are the Peppermint steel products so special?
Paper Tray, Toolbox, Tissuebox, Note Roller, ZigZag, Digital 8, Bike Lift, Frame Kit, Plug 2, and Plug 4 were designed by Roman Luyken as part of a collection that Peppermint has since discontinued. These products are no longer available from Peppermint themselves. Charles & Marie holds the last remaining stock — once they are gone, they are gone for good.
How much weight does the LOOP ROPE hold?
The LOOP ROPE has been tested to a load of 20 kg — equivalent to approximately 7 of the heaviest winter coats. For everyday use with jackets, coats, scarves, bags, and hats, it is more than adequately dimensioned. The steel-reinforced loops are height-adjustable and can be mounted to ceiling or wall.
