GESTALTEN
Moro in Marrakech. WAFFLESNCREAM in Lagos. Rebelle in a 100-year-old farmhouse in the Berkshires. What’s stopping you?
The World’s Best Shops is not a business book. It’s an argument — for everything that happens when someone stops hesitating and simply opens the door. Curated by Courier Magazine, London’s defining media brand for those who want to live and work on their own terms, this gestalten volume brings together profiles of the world’s most inspiring retail spaces with more than 70 pages of practical knowledge: How do you open your own shop? What do the best shops in the world get right? And why is brick-and-mortar retail not dying — it’s reinventing itself in wonderful ways?
A gift for everyone who dreams of a shop
You know someone who has been talking for years about opening their own shop. The folder is called “business idea”, the Pinterest boards are full, the business plan exists — somewhere in their head. Give them this book. The World’s Best Shops shows how others did it: Jomi Marcus-Bello, who built a skate culture with WAFFLESNCREAM in Lagos despite the city having no skate parks. Charlotte Hanna, who left Goldman Sachs for Rebelle — a cannabis dispensary in a 100-year-old farmhouse in the Berkshires, Massachusetts. Moro in Marrakech, a concept store selling cosmetics made from prickly-pear-seed oil and rose water, designed as an architectural homage to local craft. These aren’t fantasies. These are people who simply did it.
More than inspiration: 70+ pages of practical knowledge
Alongside the profiles, the book delivers more than 70 pages of concrete guidance: location decisions, shop design, community-building, hybrid business models, retail trends. Courier Magazine — the voice since 2013 of a generation that wants to stand on its own feet — provides the knowledge no startup course offers. The perfect birthday, Christmas, or going-away gift for anyone who wants to take the leap.

Frequently asked questions
Which shops are featured in the book?
The book profiles some of the world’s most inspiring retail spaces — including Moro (concept store in Marrakech), WAFFLESNCREAM (skate shop and culture in Lagos, founded by Jomi Marcus-Bello), Rebelle (cannabis dispensary in the Berkshires, Massachusetts, founded by Charlotte Hanna), Zona Baari (design studio in Detroit, founded by Ruqayyah Alzona Al-Baari), and Horticure (plant-care platform by Deborah Choi). Dozens of shops from around the world are featured across 288 pages.
Is this just inspiration — or is it actually practical?
Both. Alongside the visually powerful shop profiles, The World’s Best Shops offers more than 70 pages of concrete advice for anyone who wants to open their own retail space: from location strategy and shop design to hybrid business models and community building. Courier Magazine put it simply: “Retail is alive and kicking, and reinventing itself in wonderful ways.”
What is Courier Magazine — and why did it curate this book?
Courier Magazine was founded in London in 2013 and is the defining media brand for a generation that wants to live and work on its own terms — through print, podcasts, and events. The World’s Best Shops is their second book with gestalten, following “Work Better. Live Smarter. Be Happier.” (2021). Nobody knows independent business better.
Is this book also suitable for someone who already runs a shop?
Absolutely. The World’s Best Shops speaks to both audiences: those who are still dreaming — and those who have already opened and are looking for new perspectives, strategies, and inspiration. The retail trends and case studies in the practical section are valuable reading for existing shop owners too.
Is this a coffee table book or a business book?
It’s both — and that’s its strength. gestalten and Courier Magazine deliberately created a volume that convinces visually and holds up intellectually: 288 pages of hardcover, 22.5 × 29 cm, with striking photography and more than 70 pages of practical content. It sits on the coffee table and gets read.
