BARNER

The big round – the Andy is for everyone who has never found a pair of sunglasses that truly fits.

Most sunglasses are made for a specific face type – and the Andy is for everyone else. At 144 mm frame width, a 25 mm bridge and 47 mm lens width, it’s the most generous frame in Barner’s round range. The 25 mm bridge is the widest in the entire Barner collection – which means the Andy fits nose profiles where most other frames slip, sit too high, or pinch. Glossy TR-90 frame, polarised 7-layer TAC lenses, Category 3, UV400. Available in Black and Patchwork.

Some people have tried dozens of sunglasses and never found a pair that stays put without pinching. Usually the culprit is the bridge: most frames are built with 15–18 mm bridges sized for narrower nose profiles. Anyone with a slightly wider nose knows the problem: the frame sits too high, slides forward, or leaves marks. The Andy solves it with a 25 mm bridge – the widest in the Barner range. The 144 mm frame and 47 mm lens add up to a round silhouette that feels generous and easy rather than tight and performative. Andy Black is the gift you can’t go wrong with – clean, versatile, and wearable every day of summer. Andy Patchwork is for the person who has said at least once: “I’ve always wanted a tortoiseshell pair.”

Large frames have a specific problem when they’re rigid: they press at the temples and become uncomfortable over time. TR-90, the thermoplastic polyamide that Barner uses, has memory-flex properties: it gives slightly under pressure and returns to its original shape, rather than holding stiff or snapping. That means the Andy’s generous proportions stay comfortable through long days. At approximately 25g total, it’s noticeably lighter than acetate frames of the same size. It’s also completely hypoallergenic – no nickel, no plasticisers – suitable for sensitive skin and full-day wear.

Anyone who has cycled into a low sun or driven across a wet road knows that regular dark lenses don’t fully solve the problem: the light still bounces off horizontal surfaces – wet asphalt, puddles, car windscreens – and forces the eyes into a squint. Polarised lenses block that reflected horizontal light specifically. The 7-layer TAC lenses in the Andy include a polarisation filter that eliminates 82% of light intensity (Category 3: 8–18% transmittance). The result is a sharper, more comfortable image rather than simply a darker one. Full UV400 protection included. Suitable for driving.

Is the Andy really better for wider nose profiles?

Yes – that’s the Andy’s defining feature. The 25 mm bridge is the widest in the entire Barner collection. Compare: the Astoria has a 15 mm bridge, the Charles 24 mm. A wider bridge positions the lenses further apart, sitting naturally on a broader nose without pressing into the sides or sliding forward. If previous sunglasses have never sat quite right on the nose, the Andy is the model to try.

What is Patchwork – is it tortoiseshell?

Patchwork is Barner’s name for a multi-colour, patterned frame material – the tortoiseshell equivalent, with a warm mix of brown, cognac and cream tones. It’s the classic natural-material reference that has gone with round frame shapes for decades. If someone has said they’ve always wanted a tortoiseshell pair: Andy Patchwork is the answer.

Does the Andy’s size suit narrower faces too?

At 144 mm, the Andy is sized for medium to larger face widths. People with narrower or smaller faces may find it slightly oversized. In that case the Charles (142 mm, 44.5 mm lens) is the better choice: more compact and precise. The Andy is at its best on medium to large faces – especially those with wider nose profiles.

At €59 – how does this compare to other polarised sunglasses?

Most polarised sunglasses that match the Andy’s spec – TR-90 frame, 7-layer TAC lenses, UV400, a proper protective case – sit at €80–€150 or more. Designer alternatives start at €150–200 for similar protection. At €59, the Andy delivers the core performance (polarisation, UV400, lightweight frame) without the brand premium – and includes the neoprene case and microfibre cloth as standard.

Andy – the inclusive round from Barcelona. Black for every day, Patchwork for everyone who’s been looking for a tortoiseshell pair.
