Big Green Egg Large · Ø 46 cm cooking area · 70–400 °C · 5 components · freight delivery

The Big Green Egg Large is a ceramic kamado grill from the well-known American brand Big Green Egg. What sets kamado grills apart is their ceramic construction: the thick ceramic wall insulates heat extremely efficiently, stores it evenly, and releases it in a controlled manner. The result is a cooking chamber that holds stable temperatures for hours using relatively little charcoal – from around 70 °C for gentle low-and-slow cooking to 400 °C for direct high-heat grilling.

The cooking area measures Ø 46 cm – enough for 4–8 people, large enough for multiple cuts at once or a full pizza. The lid vent (REGGulator cast iron, magnet-secured) and the bottom draft door allow fine temperature control via airflow. The one-piece fire bowl ensures even hot-air circulation; the easy-to-lift lid hinge with flexible steel bands opens the dome smoothly and safely.

On the intEGGrated Nest+Handler with large swivel wheels and two front brakes, the 73 kg grill is manageable despite its weight and stands firmly on patio or paving surfaces. The robust stand is included in the set – no separate purchase needed.

The convEGGtor is the ceramic deflector plate of the Big Green Egg: placed around the fire bowl, it blocks the direct flame and redirects the heat as convection heat around the cooking chamber – that is indirect cooking. This opens up cooking methods that are not possible without it: pulled pork and brisket at 110 °C over many hours, smoking with wood chunks, baking bread and pizza in an even convection climate, roasting large cuts without direct flame contact.

The convEGGtor Basket in stainless steel holds the ceramic deflector plate stable inside the grill and makes inserting and removing it considerably easier – even when the grill is at 300 °C. Both are included in the set; a later individual purchase is not necessary.

The two half-moon cast iron grates ALHD4 replace the standard stainless steel grate included with the BGE Large. Cast iron retains heat significantly better than stainless steel and transfers it directly to the food – producing deep grill marks and more intense Maillard browning. The difference is most noticeable with steaks and thick cuts. The half-moon design allows asymmetric use: one half hot for direct grilling, the other cooler as a finishing zone. Together they form a continuous cooking surface at Ø 46 cm.

What is a kamado grill – and what sets it apart from a standard charcoal grill?

A kamado is a ceramic egg-shaped grill rooted in the Japanese clay-pot cooking tradition. The thick ceramic wall insulates heat so efficiently that the grill uses considerably less charcoal and holds stable temperatures for hours. A standard charcoal grill loses heat rapidly through its sides; in a kamado, heat stays in the cooking chamber. This allows both high-heat direct grilling at 400 °C and gentle low-and-slow cooking at 70–110 °C – on the same unit.

What does the convEGGtor do – what can't I do without it?

Without the convEGGtor, the BGE Large grills directly: fire below, flame meets the food. With the convEGGtor, direct heat is deflected – convection instead of flame. That is what makes possible: pulled pork and brisket at low temperatures for 10–15 hours, smoking without charring, baking bread and pizza in an even convection environment, roasting large joints without direct flame contact. The convEGGtor turns the grill into an outdoor oven and smoker. Without it, the BGE Large is an excellent charcoal grill; with it, it is a fundamentally different machine.

What does the convEGGtor Basket do – do I really need it?

The convEGGtor Basket is a stainless steel frame that holds the ceramic deflector plate stable inside the grill and makes inserting and removing it much safer. Without the basket, the convEGGtor rests directly on the fire bowl; with it, you can handle the plate much more confidently – even when the grill is at 300 °C. Practical benefit: if you want to switch between direct and indirect cooking during a session, the basket makes that considerably more comfortable. It is included in the set.

Why cast iron grates instead of the standard stainless steel grate?

The standard stainless steel grate included with the BGE Large is solid. Cast iron, however, retains heat substantially better and transfers it directly to the food – producing deeply imprinted grill marks, caramelised surfaces, and more intense Maillard browning. For steaks and thick cuts especially, the difference is noticeable. The half-moon ALHD4 grates can also be removed individually from the grill, making zone management easier during cooking.

How many people can the BGE Large cook for?

The BGE Large is designed for 4–8 people – the figure applies to a typical grill evening with steaks, skewers or vegetables. For low-and-slow dishes like pulled pork, a single shoulder (2–3 kg raw weight) can easily feed 10 people. For family and friend gatherings of up to around 8 people, it is the ideal size. For those who regularly cook for larger groups, the XL would be the next step.

How quickly is the BGE Large ready to cook?

The BGE Large reaches cooking temperature in approximately 15 minutes according to the manufacturer. That applies to mid-range temperatures of around 180–220 °C. For very high temperatures (350–400 °C), it takes slightly longer; for low-and-slow temperatures (70–120 °C), the settling and stabilising phase also requires patience. With practice, hitting a specific target temperature becomes straightforward.

Is the BGE Large suitable for beginners?

Yes – the BGE Large is a device that grows with its owner. Beginners start with direct grilling and learn temperature control through the vents. Indirect cooking, smoking and low-and-slow follow with experience. The learning curve is steeper than with a simple kettle grill, but anyone who invests a few sessions will not go back. One important note: a few basic rules (never open the lid fully when heating up; prevent flashback) are worth knowing from the start.

Is the BGE Large Starter Set suitable as a gift?

The BGE Large Starter Set is the gift for people who think about grilling without compromise – and who would never quite buy this grill for themselves. Whether a milestone birthday, a significant anniversary, or a group gift from several people: the set arrives by freight delivery, needs no professional assembly, and is ready to use from day one.
