SIDE BY SIDE  ·  WALL HOOK

Folds out when needed. Disappears when it isn’t.

The wall hook by side by side Design solves a problem most wall hooks create: the empty hook that stays visible on the wall when nothing is hanging from it, announcing its vacancy to the room. Folded, the aluminium hook sits flush inside its oiled walnut body – 2.5 × 2.5 cm flat against the wall. Unfolded, it extends 24 cm and holds what you give it. Designed by Sabine Meyer, awarded in 2010 by the Centre National des Arts Plastiques – France’s national institution for contemporary design –, handcrafted in the Steinhöringer Werkstätten for people with disabilities. h 24 × w 2.5 × d 2.5 cm, oiled walnut. An object with a point of view – for the hallway, bedroom or balcony, or as a gift.

How does the folding mechanism work?

The aluminium hook is gravity-assisted: at rest, it lies completely inside the walnut body and barely protrudes from the wall. A simple downward fold brings it to its full 24 cm extension. No spring mechanism, no click system – the hook follows gravity and holds its position. Folded, it reads as a wall relief; unfolded, as a conventional coat arm. The mechanism is the object: elegance in both states, not just one.

Why walnut – and what makes it different from the other wood options?

Among the five available woods, walnut is the warmest and most characterful: a brown-grey spectrum with a lively grain and a natural depth that oiling reveals rather than seals. Oiled wood is not lacquered or coated – it stays breathable, develops a patina over the years and can be re-oiled when needed. It is not a finished state but a living material. Walnut pairs particularly well with warm natural interiors: dark oak furniture, terracotta, natural linen, hammered brass.

What is the Centre National des Arts Plastiques award?

The Centre National des Arts Plastiques (CNAP) is France’s national institution for contemporary design and fine art – founded in 1982, attached to the French Ministry of Culture. CNAP does not award mass-market products; it acquires and promotes objects that make an independent contribution to design culture. Awarded objects enter the national collection. The side by side wall hook stands in a European design collection alongside objects assessed by the same criteria as other art forms – this is a state cultural judgement, not a trade fair prize.

One hook or a row – what works better?

As a single hook, it serves as a day wardrobe in the bedroom: the jacket from last night, the shirt for tomorrow morning. On a balcony or terrace, the hook for coats and umbrellas that don’t belong inside. As a row – three or five side by side, depending on wall width – it becomes a hallway wardrobe that reads as a wooden relief when folded and a full coat rack when open. Both configurations work; the choice depends on the context.

Does the wall hook make a good gift?

Particularly so – for housewarming gifts, birthdays, or for people who have limited space but care about quality. A CNAP-awarded wall hook in oiled walnut, handcrafted in a workshop for people with disabilities – 69 Euro for an object with a story behind it.
