Description

Surfing is a way of life. A life ruled by the waves and the tides, with a cozy place to pause in between. The second chapter of Matt Titone's Surf Shacks series shows how surfers live both on the water and on land.
There are many dwellings that can be described as surf shacks: Apartments in the city, cabins in national parks or tiny Hawaiian huts. Surf communities are bursting with creativity, innovation and rich personalities. Surf Shacks takes a deeper look at the homes and artistic habits of surfers. Glimpses into record collections, walks through backyard gardens or a peek into a painter's studio provide insights into the lives of surfers.

From the remote Hawaiian tree house and the Goodwin family's converted bus to the Japanese mountain hut that the founder of Gentemstick, Taro Tamai, calls home, each place has its own story. Jamie Smallwood, a sustainable architect, built an off-grid shipping container site in Byron Bay as a new domicile. The moments these vibrant personalities spend away from the swell and foam are both captivating and nuanced.

Through anecdotes and photos, illustrations and conversations, Surf Shacks reveals a more personal side of surfing and its eclectic characters.
