The UNDIAL is a free-standing sundial by Japanese design brand 100percent. Daylight passes through a small acrylic cylindrical lens and projects the current time as a shadow line directly onto the table surface. No power, no app, no display — just sunlight and geometry.

The name explains the concept: un means “without,” dial refers to the face of a sundial. The UNDIAL is therefore a sundial without a face — the time appears right where you need it.

Each UNDIAL variant is calibrated to a specific geographic latitude. The tilt angle of the body must match the latitude of your location so that the lens captures sunlight at the right angle and the shadow projection is accurate.

Type 55 is designed for approximately 55° North latitude: Germany, United Kingdom, Poland, Southern Russia.

Example cities in this zone: Berlin (~52°N), Hamburg (~53°N), Frankfurt (~50°N), London (~51°N), Warsaw (~52°N).

For southern Germany (Munich ~48°N) and Austria / Switzerland (~47–48°N), Type 45 can be an equally good choice.

Every UNDIAL angle is available in four base finishes: Matte Gold is warm and understated, Gloss Gold adds a polished accent, Matte Silver blends seamlessly into modern interiors, and Gloss Silver picks up and reflects additional light. The base is made from brass and stainless steel; a subtle patina developing over time is a natural characteristic of the material.

Which UNDIAL type do I need for Germany?

For most German cities — Berlin, Hamburg, Frankfurt, Cologne, Düsseldorf — we recommend Type 55, as they are located between 50 and 54°N. For Munich (~48°N), Type 45 may also work well. For Austria and Switzerland (~47–48°N), Type 45 is the better choice.

Does the UNDIAL show the exact time?

No — the UNDIAL gives a beautiful approximation, not a precision reading. The projected shadow shows solar time (local apparent time based on the sun’s position), which can differ from Central European Time depending on the season and geographic longitude. It tells you where the sun is — not the atomic clock.

Does the UNDIAL work on cloudy days?

The UNDIAL requires direct sunlight for a clear projection. On overcast days or under diffuse light, the shadow projection will be faint or invisible. It is a fair-weather object — and that is part of its charm.

Where should I place the UNDIAL?

A windowsill or desk with direct sun exposure is ideal. South- or southwest-facing positions work best in Europe. The UNDIAL stands freely and requires no mounting.

Will the base change color over time?

Yes, brass and stainless steel can develop a subtle patina over time. This is not a defect but a natural aging process that gives the piece individual character.

Is the UNDIAL a good gift?

Yes — the UNDIAL combines Japanese design, physics, and daily curiosity in one object that needs no explanation but always sparks conversation. A special gift for design lovers, nature enthusiasts, and anyone who appreciates a moment of stillness.

Can I order the UNDIAL as a corporate gift?

Yes, Charles & Marie offers corporate gifting in larger quantities. You can submit your enquiry via the Corporate Gifts section in the top menu.

What materials is the UNDIAL made from?

The lens is acrylic; the base consists of brass and stainless steel. The interplay of transparent plastic and warm metal makes the UNDIAL a decorative object even without sunlight.
