BARNER

Small frame, sharp thinking – the Charles is Barner’s most intellectual silhouette.

The Charles is the one Barner model that doesn’t shout. With a 44.5 mm lens width, it’s notably smaller than most round frames on the market – a deliberate reference to the compact, precise eyewear of the 1960s Paris intellectual scene. The glossy TR-90 frame is light (around 25g), flexible without being fragile, and completely hypoallergenic. Polarised 7-layer TAC lenses in Category 3 cut glare from wet roads, water surfaces and car windscreens – making everything sharper, not just darker. Available in Crystal Combi, Lemonade and Ocean Combi.

Most round sunglasses go big and soft. The Charles goes the other way: 44.5 mm lenses and a 24 mm bridge (the widest in Barner’s round category) create a frame that sits close and precise – framing the face rather than covering it. That’s a real distinction. Crystal Combi is arguably the most original choice in the range: a transparent frame that nearly disappears and yet makes an unmistakeable impression. Lemonade carries a warm, yellow-tinged crystal glow. Ocean Combi reads as a blue-grey gradient – the colour of sunlit coastal water. The Charles is the ideal gift for someone who considers themselves a person of taste but wouldn’t choose something loud. Crystal Combi especially is that rare thing: a pair of sunglasses that draws compliments and makes people ask where they’re from.

TR-90 is a thermoplastic polyamide – the kind of material that bends under pressure without snapping and springs back to its original shape without any white stress marks. That means the Charles survives being sat on, shoved in a bag, or dropped in a way that acetate frames simply don’t. At around 25g, the full frame is light enough to wear for hours without noticing it’s there. It’s also completely hypoallergenic: no nickel, no acetate plasticisers, no reactions even on sensitive skin. The glossy finish is a deliberate aesthetic choice – more structured and precise than matte, with a quality closer to acetate without the brittleness.

Standard sunglasses darken everything equally. Polarised lenses do something more targeted: they filter out horizontally polarised light – which is exactly the kind of blinding glare that bounces off wet roads, rivers, car bonnets and glass buildings. The result isn’t a darker image but a sharper, more saturated one – like turning up the contrast without losing the brightness. The TAC lenses in the Charles are built in 7 layers, with a central polarisation filter that reduces light transmission by 82% (Category 3: 8–18% light transmittance). Full UV400 protection blocks all UVA and UVB radiation up to 400 nanometres. Safe and approved for driving.

Are 44.5 mm lenses very small – will they suit my face?

The Charles is intentionally compact – smaller than most round frames, which typically sit between 48 and 52 mm. This makes it particularly well-suited to smaller or medium-sized faces, or to anyone who wants a precise, refined look rather than a statement oversized frame. If you prefer a larger round silhouette, the Andy (47 mm lenses, 144 mm frame width) offers more coverage.

What exactly is Crystal Combi – is it completely see-through?

Crystal Combi refers to a transparent or near-transparent frame, often with subtle colour accents at the temples or bridge. The frame itself is clear and light-transmitting – an architectural look that puts all the visual focus on the lenses. It’s a bold choice that looks unlike anything in the usual black-or-tortoiseshell range.

Can I buy the Charles as a gift without knowing the exact size?

Yes – the Charles comes in a single size, so no sizing decision is needed. Just choose a colour. Crystal Combi and Ocean Combi are particularly strong gift choices as they have strong character without being divisive.

How do I clean polarised lenses without damaging them?

Always use the included microfibre cloth – never a dry t-shirt, paper towel or rough fabric. Dry wiping with coarse materials can scratch the polarisation film. For stubborn marks, hold the lenses briefly under lukewarm water, then gently pat dry with the microfibre cloth.

Charles – the compact round from Barcelona, for those who let their taste speak for itself.
