Description
THE SCHOOL OF LIFE
Sometimes the best gift is a question rather than an answer.
Seven pieces, one subject: who am I, really? The School of Life brings together three hardback books, three card sets and a glass hourglass as a way into self-knowledge. At its centre sits the 160-page journal “Who Am I?” with coloured tabbed pages, made to be written in. All seven pieces are the English originals.
What is in the set
Three hardback books form the foundation. “Who Am I?” is a journal of 160 pages with tabbed pages for flicking through, 22.8 × 16 cm, filled with unusual and often oblique prompts that build a psychological portrait. “How to Overcome Your Childhood” spends 118 pages taking apart what was shaped before the fifteenth birthday, from the way affection is shown to attitudes towards work. “What They Forgot to Teach You at School” gathers on 144 pages the lessons no curriculum covers, from love and career to loneliness.
Then three card sets, made for laying out rather than reading. The Stoicism set holds 53 cards with the insights of the great Stoic thinkers, each paired with a commentary on what still holds today. The 60 cards of “Know Yourself” carry an exercise on the front and the analysis on the back. The Emotional Barometer is a small apparatus: a box of 20 cards with a movable dial and a stand that folds out of the lid, describing moods everyone recognises and almost nobody can name. Weepy. Nostalgic. Dreamy.
The 15-minute timer is the quietest piece and often the one that stays out longest. A glass hourglass, 13 × 5.5 cm, with an instruction booklet and box. It marks a quarter of an hour for whatever keeps getting postponed: the letter to an old friend, an honest look at your own work, playing with a child without checking the time.
Why it makes a good gift
People who think about themselves rarely buy themselves the material for it. That is where this set comes in. It is the gift for someone in the middle of rearranging things: after a job change, a separation, a milestone birthday, a move to a city where nobody knows them. It does not say “pull yourself together”, it says “take a closer look”.
With seven pieces it can also be split up. The journal for a birthday, the hourglass for a housewarming, the Emotional Barometer as something to bring along. Give it whole and you give someone months of material rather than one evening.
What readers report
Readers writing on the site of The School of Life keep returning to the same point about the “Who Am I?” journal: the questions land and do not read like questionnaire filler, and there is a pull to answer one more after closing it. The ending of the book, which draws the answers together, is praised as well. On the wholesale platform Faire the journal is marked as a bestseller for the brand.
The point that honestly belongs here: the writing is precise and at times ironic, and the three books ask for attention. Anyone reading in a second language will move more slowly and lose part of the tone. With the card sets this weighs far less than with the books.

Frequently asked questions
Is this the original English edition?
Yes, all seven pieces are the English originals published by The School of Life, printed exactly as they are sold in the UK. There is no German or otherwise translated version of this set, and we do not stock one. If you are reading in a second language, the three books ask for solid English while the card sets are short-form and far easier to follow.
Who is this set a good gift for?
For adults standing at a turning point, or simply fond of thinking about themselves. It works for people who already keep a journal as well as for those who never tried, because the prompts take care of the beginning. It is not a gift for someone who reads unasked-for self-improvement as a lecture.
Can you write in the books?
In “Who Am I?” that is exactly the point: it is a journal with room for your own answers across 160 pages, with coloured tabbed pages for jumping between themes. “How to Overcome Your Childhood” and “What They Forgot to Teach You at School” are made for reading and have no fields to fill in.
Do the seven pieces have to be used in a set order?
No, the set follows no sequence and is not a course. Most people start with the journal because it guides most concretely, and reach for the card sets when only ten minutes are going spare. Every piece also works on its own.
How much space does the set need?
The largest piece is the journal at 22.8 × 16 cm, and all card boxes are smaller than 16 × 11.5 cm. Together it fits on an ordinary bedside table or into one shelf compartment. For carrying around, the card sets suit better than the hardback books.
Is the set suitable for teenagers?
From roughly 16 in terms of content, because it deals with childhood conditioning, relationships and work, and The School of Life glosses over none of it. Younger readers tend to get more out of a single card set than out of all seven pieces at once. The journal in particular rewards someone who already has a few decisions behind them.
What is the hourglass for?
It measures a quarter of an hour and makes it visible, which a phone timer cannot do because the phone is itself the distraction. It is meant as a daily block for one thing that otherwise keeps being left. In the set it is also the only piece you do not read but simply turn over.
How does the set differ from the individual titles?
In content, not at all: these are the same seven items we also stock separately. The difference lies in the selection. The School of Life chose titles that approach one subject through reading, answering and pausing, and as a gift the whole thing arrives in one piece.

Seven pieces, one subject, and a question nobody answers in passing. The set for someone you credit with more than a gift card.
