Areaware was founded in 2005 in New York and created everyday objects with over 50 independent designers that are playful and functional in equal measure. In 2026 the brand was acquired by Piecework — the collection will continue in a modified form. At Charles & Marie the last Areaware originals in original packaging are available: Cubebot, Blockitecture, Palimals and more. Europe's largest selection of Areaware Collector Pieces — while stocks last.
What Happened to Areaware?
Areaware, founded in 2005 by Lisa Yashon and Noel Wiggins in New York, ceased independent operations on 1 May 2026. Piecework acquired the brand and will continue it — with a smaller range, new packaging and a slight rebrand. The Cubebot will be produced by David Weeks independently going forward, separate from Piecework. The products at Charles & Marie come from the original Areaware era — first generation, original packaging.
Areaware Collector Pieces at Charles & Marie
Charles & Marie holds Europe's largest selection of Areaware originals in original packaging. The Cubebot by David Weeks Studio — a foldable wooden robot in the Japanese Kumiki tradition — is available in various sizes and finishes. Blockitecture by James Paulius — architectural building blocks that form geometric cityscapes. Palimals by Rilla Alexander — stylised wooden animals for children and design lovers. Plus: Stack Containers, Goober Candles, the Everybody series with Dusen Dusen and more.
Why Collect Areaware Originals?
Areaware products were never mass-produced. Each piece was designed by a specific designer for a specific purpose — David Weeks, Dusen Dusen, Fort Standard, Rilla Alexander, Susan Kare, Harry Allen. The model worked like a record label for designers. Now that the original Areaware has ended, these pieces are true collector items — first production runs in original packaging that won't be made again in this form.
